Beating the Heat: Apparel

If you're feeling really hot during the summer, think about what you're wearing. Selecting the right clothes can help you feel cooler. Here are a few things you can do to be more comfortable when it's hot outside.

First, wear clothes that aren't too tight. Tight clothes trap heat close to your body and make you feel even hotter. When it's hot, things, including your skin, get bigger. Tight clothes can be uncomfortable. So, instead of tight jeans, go for pants that feel comfy and not too tight.

Choose apparel that is made from natural materials like cotton, linen, or silk. These are better for really hot days. They let your body breathe and release heat, which helps you feel less hot. Save the fancy synthetic clothes for when it cools off.

It might sound strange, but covering more of your skin can actually help you stay cooler. If you're going to be outside in the sun, wear a long-sleeved shirt and long pants. This protects your skin from getting too hot in the sun. Make sure the clothes are loose and made from natural materials, like we talked about before.

Wearing a hat with a wide brim is a smart idea too. It shades your face and keeps the sun off your ears and neck. This not only helps you stay cooler, but it also stops the sun from damaging your skin. It's easier on your eyes too because the hat reduces bright sunlight.

Lastly, go for light-colored clothes. White and light colors are better when the sun is intense. Dark colors make you hotter because they soak up more heat. If you switch to lighter colors, you'll reflect more sunlight and stay cooler.

So, think about what you wear – it really makes a difference in staying cool when it's hot outside.
